I remember watching Scars of Dracula (Hammer Film Studios), when I was still a wee lad.
It scared the living crap out of me, but also planted the seed.
From then on, I was interested in vampires, no matter what the source.
I love anything about them, the legends, the myths and most of the movies
(some are only vampire movies in name, and nothing really more).
And one thing about vampires that I feel is essential, is the fangs
(yes, yes I know, vampires only have fangs in the movies, well all the cool ones he he he he he he).
And from that first time I have always wanted fangs.
But living in South Africa, we were doomed to those white “fits all sizes” fangs,
that were basically, well crap. I hated those things, and decided I should make my own.
Well that was easier said then done when you are 10 years old and the internet was still only a gleam in someone’s eye.
I remember my first pair of fangs included wire and some pliers (don’t ask; it was not a pretty sight).
The whole experience put me off fang making for awhile, until a couple of years later,
that I stumbled upon the idea again (have not discovered girls yet). I decided to give it a try again.
And as all inquiring minds know, where do you look for info? At your local library of course.
I almost fell over backwards when the friendly old librarian (although she did give me a strange look at my request)
told me that they had a book which might help. The book was three dimensional make-up by Dick Smith.
And guess what, it had an entire section on fangs!!
I spend days, weeks reading through it all, studying the pictures, memorizing each sentence.
But yes it was not all good news. Words were thrown around like monomer, acrylic resin, epoxy resin, alginate etc.
Things I had no clue about, so I was stuck again.
I finally decided to go and visit my local dentist, boy was that a waste of time,
no fangs for me. So I decided to use my own materials. I started using plaster and a
very nice porcelain like clay called fimo.
There and then I started making my own fangs, it was touch and go for awhile, and lot of swearing
and shaking fists in the sky, but finally I learned one thing, and that was sculpting with clay (no I do not use these materials anymore so you can relax).
Well when I was old enough to earn a salary (in my normal 8-4 job), I decided to investigate some more into these
obscure arcane materials, and see if I could find a supplier (the internet was one with us now, so it was easier).
With luck I stumbled upon a very professional dental supply company called Elite Dental.
I got all the materials from them, and decided to try the way the book suggested.
Well to make a short story short, and 13 years later (and after a ton of help from other fangsmiths out here),
I am finally able to make proper vampire fangs (Well I have not had complaints yet)
